Flat
Roofing
Generally
flat roofs are not recommended but if one cannot be avoided
we have the know how to give you the best results. Generally
for domestic use you must chose between Butyl and Felt.
- Butyl
- Basically Butyl is easier to install and as it is one
complete sheet you have the assurance of no joints leaking.
Butyl became very popular in the Eighties when the NIHE
began allowing grants on it while refusing felt roofs as
the felt roofing relied too much on workmanship.
Felt
- Threes nothing wrong with felt roofing just sometimes
there is a problem with who puts them on.Often the felting
is done by the builder who built the garage/extension to
save money. So when it takes him 2 hours and a full bottle
of gas to heat the boiler-he doesn’t let a little
rain interfere with his plans - he just lays it anyway.
If I had a roof attached to the house needing covered and
had to choose between the two and no grant was involved
I would choose two layers two-ply felt (non mineral) with
two coats aluminum solar reflecting paint. The problem I
have with the butyl is you require a minimum 25kg smooth
river pebbles/meter to cover, which is a drag and can makes
future maintenance difficult. For a small flat roof (bay
roof etc) you should consider lead or copper.
